No Matter How Vicious!

Where Did I Find this Information?
One day I happened to stumble upon a book, The Revolution of Horsemanship and What It Means to Mankind by Robert Miller and Hugh Downs. Thumbing through this fascintating book, I came across a chapter on old horse trainers. Masters of the 19th century, like Jesse Beery and Professor Sydney Galvane. It was then that I learned of the authoritative horse trainer, Mathew Horace Hayes (1842-1904), a Captain in the British Army who trained military horses all over the empire-in England, Ireland, South Africa, and even India.

Hayes' knowledge was extensive. Miller and Downs write:

"Captain Matthew Horace Hayes is one of the 19th century's most important horsemen."

And we learn that:

"Captain Hayes was a world traveler and twice had the opportunity to test his abilities on a more exotic equine, the Zebra. ...it was considered the ultimate test of skill. On both occasions in less than an hour, the Zebra was calmly carrying a rider."

I was intrigued. If this man could make a wild animal like a Zebra carry a rider calmly in less than an hour, imagine what his methods could do with horses! I then learned that Captain Hayes had written several books on horsemanship. He had been deceased for more than a hundred years, so where could one find it?

After months of searching, I was lucky enough to come across an old yellowed-copy in a library. I devoured the book, amazed at the insights that filled the pages which could only be known to a military horseman, a breed of man that no longer exists. These were vital horse training secrets that would only be known to people who lived with and depeneded on horses for their very survival.

Deal with Bad Behavior Like
Catching Problems, Rearing, and Bucking

Even more, these methods were easy to follow. The explanations were detailed, but clear, so I began to use them on my own horses. I was amazed by the success. So I kept reading and found to my amazement that his books contained a complete course on horseback riding, like how to mount, handle the reins, teach the horse to move through paces, turning - it was all there! Exercise programs laid out in complete detail.

These easy-to-follow techniques can be used on any horse. Calling on his years of training experience with hundreds of horses, Captain Hayes tells us what to do in any situation.

  • Is your horse stubborn?
Hayes knew how to fix that in under a quarter of an hour.

  • Is your horse nervous?
Hayes knew just the trick to desensitize any horse.

  • Does your horse buck? Does he refuse to turn?
Hayes knew what to do for any problem a horse owner might face.

In these books, I wasn't just learning about horse training. I was learning about riding skills, from basic to advanced show riding and dressage.

Hayes teaches:

  • How to do lead changes.

  • How to trot and canter properly, and how to hold the horse's head.

  • How to communicate with the horse with your feet and hands.

  • What kind of bits to use.

  • How to do advanced techniques like the Spanish Walk and Spanish Trot.

There was so much information in there, I could hardly keep it to myself. That's when I decided to create the Matthew Horace Hayes Illustrated Horsemanship course and make it available to all horse owners.
